What exactly does a stylist do and how to get the most out of the experience

What does a stylist do?

Simply put, a stylist works with you to refine your appearance. We take that one step further and also help you understand how you’re perceived and work to align your larger personal and professional goals with your image. Like any specialized professional — a personal trainer, a chef — a stylist uses their expertise in fashion and image to take your appearance to the next level. Yes, you can dress yourself, just like you can run on the treadmill alone. But if you value efficiency, optimization, and saving time and money, then you will benefit from working with a Sociology of Style stylist.

How do you work with a stylist?

Part of why clients enjoy working with a Sociology of Style Stylist is that we make the process as concise and enjoyable as possible. We understand that you’re busy, so we help to lessen the burden of trying to look your best every day. First, you fill out a comprehensive questionnaire — we want to know as much about your look, lifestyle, and goals as possible. Then we analyze that information and begin constructing your personal style report. We then work together in your closet to eliminate items that don’t align with your goals, revisit items you never wear and find fresh ways to reintroduce them into your daily wardrobe, and assess what’s missing in your closet and develop a plan for making smart purchases that contribute to the construction of a holistic wardrobe, eliminating the “I have nothing to wear” syndrome. You’ll also learn how to pull together winning outfits for your life’s contexts, all while better understanding how these specific choices affect the way you’re perceived. In short, you’ll learn to take charge of your own image identity.

During the Closet Catharsis (or closet cleanout), your stylist will create a wardrobe wishlist to guide them during the Strategic Shopping session. They’ll identify key items to supplement your wardrobe, then scout out the best spots for your needs before you shop together. During your shopping trip, you won’t just acquire new items — you’ll also learn about fit, fabric, colors and designers that work best for you.

Your stylist will then fill in on items you didn’t find in the stores with online options, compiling a comprehensive, multi-page personal shopping report, which identifies your style archetype and current goals, and includes personalized style tips, notes on fit, styling suggestions, care instructions, and curated online shopping selections with descriptions and explanations. Or, alternatively, your stylist will do all your shopping online, eliminating the need for you to visit a store and further saving you time.
